Business owners in BID to boost trade in Worcester Park

Business owners in Worcester Park have joined forces to launch a new group which aims to boost trade in the area and offer customers a better experience.

A launch event was held on 8 September at the Royal British Legion branch in Central Road to start the process for formally setting up a Business Improvement District (BID).

A BID is an independent, not-for-profit company run and funded by local businesses with the aim of improving a commercial area. The BID is answerable to a board of directors, who are all business owners or managers in the area.

Keith Martin, chairman of the Royal British Legion branch, said: “BIDs have been very successful in other parts of London and beyond. By setting one up in Worcester Park we hope to develop projects to help businesses and market the area as a great destination for shoppers.”

Some of the things the Worcester Park BID hopes to achieve include:

  • Making the area more attractive with green spaces, cleaner streets and better signage
  • Marketing more events such as markets and fun days to bring in shoppers from further afield
  • Setting up free wi-fi in the area
  • Working closely with police and safer neighbourhood teams to protect businesses and keep the area safe for visitors

All business rate payers contribute funding to the BID, in addition to their business rates, and this is raised by way of a small levy based on the rateable value of their property.
