High standard from pupils despite tougher GCSEs

Despite significant changes to the grading of this year’s GCSEs, Sutton schools continue to perform to a high standard.

The proportion of students across the borough achieving 5 A* to C grades including English and Maths is comparable to last year’s result of 70.4%, provisional figures suggest.

Cllr Wendy Mathys, Chair of the Children, Family and Education Committee at Sutton Council, said:

“The new grading system is more rigorous and has been designed to make it more difficult for students to earn top marks.

“Despite this, I am delighted that pupils in Sutton schools have continued to excel and produce a set of excellent results.

“Congratulations to all pupils on their hard work and our appreciation and thanks to the hugely dedicated teachers and governors who continue to give our young people the best possible start in life.”
