Selfless dedication of local carers highlighted at Mayor’s lunch

The selfless dedication of local carers was highlighted at a lunch hosted by the Mayor of Sutton, Cllr Jean Crossby, and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Marlene Heron.

Sutton Carers Centre is one of the mayor’s chosen charities of the year, along with Sutton Women’s Centre, and the lunch held in the Mayor’s Parlour at the Civic Offices on Monday brought together more than 25 carers, staff and volunteers.

The mayor welcomed her guests to the event said: “It is an honour to be hosting this event today, my first since becoming mayor.

“Many congratulations on reaching your 25th anniversary. I am full of admiration for the tireless work of carers who, despite great challenges and often personal difficulties, manage to give loved ones the care and support they need.

“Sutton Carers Centre is a charity close to my heart that provides an incredible support network for so many people in the community.”

The lunch also marked the start of national Carers Week, a UK wide, annual awareness campaign, which aims to improve the lives of unpaid carers and the people they care for by building communities which recognise and support the work of carers.

This year, Carers Week runs until Sunday 18th June and Sutton Carers Centre has organised a host of activities including complementary therapies, a quiz night, and free health checks.

Rachael MacLeod, Chief Executive Officer of the Carers Centre, said: “We are very excited to celebrate national Carers Week and have pledged to reach out into the community to raise awareness about carers’ issues and the services available through the Centre.

“We are hugely grateful for the financial support provided by Sutton Council and Sutton Clinical Commissioning Group which enables us to provide such a strong support network benefiting more than 2,000 families in the borough. With an estimated 20,000 adult and young carers in Sutton, however, we hope to be able to do even more.”
